Ballet and Porn: Curious Bedfellows

Ballet and pornWhat makes ballet so boring? According to Tamara Rojo, the newly appointed artistic director of the English National Ballet, it’s men. Men often approach dance in much the same way they approach pornography, Rojo told Time Out magazine, suggesting that she and her female fellows would bring a more sexually egalitarian sensibility to a world of dance currently overrun with male perspectives and attitudes. “Female sensitivity is different,” Rojo said. “And there are issues that I want to see on stage approached by women. Very often we see relationships approached from a male perspective. Like in porn, it shapes the way you look at things.”

Asked to elaborate on her ballet-porn analogy, Rojo told Time Out “It tends to be a more physical approach. Men start with the steps. I find women start with the emotional landscape. They say, ‘This is the situation; let’s find a language for it.’ With men it tends to be, ‘This is the language,’ and then you try to work out the situation through the steps.” Before you cry “artsy-fartsy” at her, though, give Rojo’s observations some credence. How many times have you seen porn briefly revolutionized by a woman? Directors like Belladonna and Dana Vespoli and Bobbi Starr, adventurous and daring performers in their own right, broadened the palette of mainstream hardcore porn almost immediately upon taking up the camera. Belladonna brought more powerful performers to the fore in an often all-female pantheon of decadence involving foot fetishism, tender lovemaking, brutal fisting sessions, and, oddly enough, frank conversation. Starr and Vespoli have followed Belladonna’s lead and are now producing movies far more expressive and original than most of their orifice-obsessed male counterparts. Although, I’m afraid, nobody seems to have alerted Rojo or her dancers.

The recent surge in feminist attitudes in hardcore pornography also seems to have been missed by Guardian columnist Judith Mackrell, who notes some major exceptions to Rojo’s description of methodical males and emotional women choreographers, exceptions like Twyla Tharp and Russell Maliphant. Mackrell continues, “The more important truth for Rojo is that with about 90% of today’s ballet repertory [and pornography -ed.] being made by men, as well as a disproportionate percentage of modern dance repertory, we have only a limited idea of the kind of work that women might make.”

So (continuing the ballet-porn analogy) now that Rojo has essentially landed control over the nation’s foremost adult film studios and while that might be a considerable step above Belladonna’s station as an Evil Angel director, it’s certainly not far off in terms of potential for an artistic, sexual, and industry revolution.

The Best of Belladonna

Belladonna

Upon her 2012 retirement from performing, many fans of legendary pornstar cum director Belladonna lamented that their favorite degenerate sex maniac wouldn’t be appearing on DVD box covers again anytime soon. They stocked up on scenes and movies both digitally and physically distributed, built a solid enough archive to withstand years of use and abuse, and steadied themselves to enjoy new work from the current porn era’s most influential woman only if she directed the frivolity. Now all that is set to change thanks to Belladonna’s comrades at Evil Angel.

Due for release at the end of July, Legendary: The Best of Belladonna is a two-disc DVD set and VOD package containing ten scenes and six hours of material from the first tattooed ‘alternative’ pornstar to shave her head and take brutal DPs as a matter of course. The chosen scenes haven’t just been selected by the star herself, but selected to show the bisexual nature of Belladonna’s desire. Disc Two favors all-girl carnality and sees Belladonna fucking Joanna Angel, enjoying an anally inclined sleepover with Bobbi Starr and Dana DeArmond, has Sandra Romain for dinner (in more ways than one), squirts herself silly with Cytherea, and takes Alexis Texas to new heights of pleasure with the help of a few toys. Disc One takes care of Belladonna’s hetero leanings, too, with James “BMOPS” Deen lending his impressive cock (and foot) wrangling skills alongside those of Mr. Pete, Mark Wood, John Strong, and the fearsome duo of Rico Strong and Prince Yahshua who stretch and push Belladonna further even than most of her onscreen partners.

In the words of Evil Angel general manager Christian Mann, “We throw the term ‘legendary’ around a lot, but in Belladonna’s case, it’s merited.” And Mr. Pink couldn’t agree more, sir!

Two New Angel Directors Debut

Asa Akira gangbang

After years of following the orders of others, two of porn’s most esteemed performers are on the verge of becoming noted directors. Reigning AVN Female Performer of the Year Asa Akira and crossover man of the hour, James Deen, are headed to Elegant Angel and Evil Angel respectively to push their careers into a whole new realm.

After winning the 2013 AVN Award for Female Performer of the Year and co-hosting the illustrious gala event, it seemed Asa Akira had it all. It is now clearly, however, that she wasn’t about to rest on her prestigious laurels. Having shot three movies with Elegant Angel for the Asa Akira is Insatiable series, choosing to direct for the same company that pushed her performing to bold new heights was an easy decision. Elegant Angel owner, Patrick Collins calls Akira “the real deal” and cites her authenticity and daring as just two of the reasons she’ll be a great director. Akira’s first effort behind the camera will focus on her personal favorite pornographic niche, the gangbang, and follow the premise set by the five earlier volumes of Elegant Angel’s Gangbanged series: two women each taking on seven men in a pair of no-holes-barred carnal clusterfucks that, with Asa at the helm, are sure to make for powerful viewing.

James Deen, 2013’s XBIZ and AVN Male Performer of the Year and the most promising crossover performer in recent memory, has already directed nearly a dozen features for Burning Angel and his own James Deen Productions, but now he steps into a new phase of his directing career, joining the likes of Belladonna, Manuel Ferrara, Rocco Siffredi, and John Stagliano as an Evil Angel director. Evil Angel General Manager Christian Mann noted that Deen wasn’t hired for his current surge in mainstream popularity but for simply making movies that appeal to EA chief Stagliano’s “innate sense of what makes good smut”, saying “I’m happy to say James Deen’s directorial efforts have met that standard.”

Deen’s Evil Angel debut, James Deen Loves Butts stars Dana DeArmond, Jessie Rogers, and Mason Moore (as well as Deen himself) and is set for a July release. Akira’s directorial debut, the sixth installment of Elegant Angel’s infamous Gangbanged series, is set to begin photography very soon with a release date yet to be announced.

Wear Evil on Your Sleeve

EVIL by Ricky Carralero

If you really love a particular band, you can advertise that fact with a t-shirt. If you really love Nike’s shoes, you can brand yourself with a chest-mounted tick motif and show the world how you don’t think and instead “Just Do It”. Hell, if you’re immensely proud of the fact that you partake in the United States democratic process, you can even promote the act of voting with an “I Voted” sticker on election day. But what do you do if you want to tell the world how much you enjoy the work of a particular pornography studio? If studio in question is Evil Angel, well, now there’s a solution.

Preparing to officially launch in the near future, Evil Angel’s latest endeavor, a clothing line sporting artwork designed by a longtime fan, may not yet be ready for public purchases but after giving fans and industry bodies a sneak peek at the recent International Lingerie Show, which took place at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on April 8-10. The artist, Ricky Carralero, came to Evil Angel by submitting original artworks for publication in EA head honcho John Stagliano’s Buttman Magazine. That artwork later ended up on some t-shirts and impressed Stagliano enough to warrant launching a new venture for his massively successful Evil Angel brand. The clothing line, which includes t-shirts for men and women, and tank tops, leggings, and camel-toe panties for women, each item boasting Carralero’s tattoo-style paintings, will be officially unleashed on consumers in a few months time, once Stagliano and crew “see what works and what doesn’t”.
